On Mona Lisa Puzzle, we find a Korean-born pianist/composer Hey Rim Jeon exploring a set of all new jazz compositions, supported by a power-house rhythm section featuring Dave Liebman on saxophones, Terri Lyne Carringtonon drums, James Genus on bass and Richie Barshay on percussion. Reminiscent of early landmark Blue-Note recordings, the album makes a bold and fresh statement that bristles with super-charged energy yet still allows for moments of space and intimacy. Standout tracks include the mesmerizing 9/4 time signature title track “Mona Lisa Puzzle”, the raw exploration of “Alpha & Omega”, and the elegant beauty of the ballad “This Fall”. Mona Lisa Puzzle is essential listening for any lover of fine jazz recordings.
